What is Dental Crown and Bridge?

In root canal treatment a crown or a cap is used to protect the tooth structure after treatment and to replace missing teeth a bridge is used. Generally patients do not have idea that artificial caps and crowns are made up of metal or coated with metal component. Most of the metal caps/bridges/crowns are made up of ‘white metal’, its combinations of alloys like nickel-chromium/ cobalt –chromium or others. Precious metals/alloys are rarely used now days.

Your gum may react metals just like you are wearing artificial jewellery and developed skin reactions, most of the skin reactions are less severe than skin reactions. Nickel is a metal relatively more frequent causative for allergy. Use of Nickel can be eliminated by use of ‘Ceramic Crowns’. These crowns are do not have metal component in it whatsoever much less nickel so closest part to your gum will be more similar material like tooth. During your next visit ask your dentist about metal free crown. Keep in mind that whenever dentist talks about ‘ceramic crown’ he means ‘Metal ceramic’. It means part of crown closest to gum and touch to your tooth is metal and outer layer is of ceramic. Simple examination is sufficient to identify the difference.

‘Metal free crown’ is commonly misunderstood term, metal free doesn’t mean it all made up of ALL CERAMIC, it might be made up of Acrylic (plastic) which is not friendly to gum and not long lasting as compare to ceramic.
